Few films from the early eighties have aged as well as Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Fast Times remains one of those rare comedies that remains entertaining no matter how many times you watch it. There’s a few good explanations for this, I mean the movie does seem to have everything-a simple yet funny story, a young Nicolas Cage, arguably one of the best pool scenes of all time, a conversation about brain damage, the list goes on and on. Personally though, the one thing that has me returning to the movie time and time again is Jeff Spicoli. Spicoli, played by Sean Penn, is a paragon of seventies and eighties surf and skate culture, spaced out beyond recognition and constantly telling jokes without even realizing it. Perpetually red eyed and smiling, Spicoli fits the role of stoned surfer to a tee, rocking floral shirts, a skateboard, short shorts, checkerboard Vans, washed denim, and worn polos. Professing that “All I need are some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I’m fine,” Spicoli subscribed a worry free ideology that we can all take notes from. Do what you wanna do, be happy, and just enjoy yourself. It’s this attitude that makes Spicoli not only a memorable character, but a stylish one as well, throwing together outfits that reflect his contentedly cool spirit.
