Bags

In a world where menswear accessories brands are a “bespoke” dime an “artisanal” dozen, Frank Clegg is the constant. What began as a hobby for Frank during the early seventies has now blossomed into one of the last great luxury leather goods companies in America. For over four decades, Frank has worked out of his Fall River, Massachusetts studio to create a line of bags and accessories that recapture the days when a solid leather bag was a man’s trustiest sidekick. I had a chance to speak with Frank about his brand’s past, present, and future.

To start off, how did Frank Clegg as a business begin, and how did you first get involved with making bags?

I started in the business in 1970 when I was given a few tools as a gift. I realized early on that I was able to make just about anything I wanted to without much effort, so I began selling pieces as fast as I could make them. Not just bags and briefcases, but boxes, chest sets, plant hangers, just about anything that could be made from leather. We were all experimenting in those days!

On the surface the story of Libero Ferrero sounds like it could belong to any heritage brand from the past century-three brothers come together to create a line of American made goods inspired by their Italian heritage.  Although after sitting down yesterday with Pete Lafferty, who runs Libero Ferrero along with his two brothers and fiance, I soon realized that the brand is anything but boilerplate.

Born and raised in Michigan, Pete and his two brothers Matthew and Adam, never started out thinking they would be designing bags.  With backgrounds in sales, architecture, and art design, the three collectively had all the loose components needed to start a brand, but it was something they had not considered until a few years ago.  Deciding it was time for a career change, the brother’s pooled their resources and joined together with Pete’s fiance, Julia Salamon to form Libero Ferrero.

Since the brand’s founding, location has always played an integral role.  With one brother out in Los Angeles overseeing production, another brother based in Chicago where he works with Horween leather sourcing materials, and Pete and Julia living in New York handling design and marketing, Libero Ferrero is strategically spaced out to capitalize on each region’s distinct advantage.

Fortunately, Pete brought along two new designs yesterday, the Brigadier a daily carryall and the Balfour a full-zip weekender, which gave me a chance to try out the bags myself.  The first thing I noticed was the buttery texture of the Horween leather, which was some of the softest material I’ve ever felt on a bag.  I was also amazed that the bags were both sturdy and lightweight, a testament to the strength of the leather.  Overall though, what I found most remarkable, or rather unremarkable was the designs themselves.  I say unremarkable because Libero Ferrero’s real strength lies in their simplicity.

The designs are timeless, and not timeless in a tacky marketing way, but literally the bags look like they could have come from any era.  Libero Ferrero’s bags are understated in the best way, on the exterior they allow the straightforward designs and quality of the materials to speak for themselves, focusing on the interior to provide the details that a man really needs.  Lined with medical-grade nylon and Holland & Sherry suiting wool, inside of the bags the focus is on functionality, filled with pockets and wide-mouthed zippers.  These are the sort of bag that every man needs, they’re not flashy, you won’t see them on some runway, but what they will do is make your life easier, and be a daily compliment to your suit for decades to come.

Palmer Trading Company may be headquartered on Sullivan Street amidst the most heavily trafficked shopping district in New York, yet the brand itself is quintessentially New England.  While PTC is already revered for their handsome store and impressive stock, their in house brand has become noteworthy in and of itself.  Palmer stems from Palmer, Massachusetts the hometown of PTC designers, Willy and David, and this northeastern spirit is reflected in the brand’s collections.  The duo keeps as much manufacturing as possible in the northeast and this thoughtful craftsmanship is evident in every stitch and seam of PTC’s pieces.  Palmer’s most recent offering has a strong, dignified look throughout but the two most instantly remarkable pieces are the penny-loafers.  The first features an emerald green, Horween leather body on top of a crepe sole, and has a classic New England prep look to it, but the non-traditional color really elevates the shoe.  The second version is a beefrolled navy blue Chromexcel leather loafer with tan stitching on a white vibram sole.  The sturdy sole and Americana details give this loafer an appropriately rugged northeastern feel.  Palmer’s collection goes much deeper than just footwear, with wallets, belts, and other leather goods all manufactured out of dark, rich leathers that’ll age down to a beautiful worn patina.  Finally, PTC offers a variety of leather and canvas bags, in particular a computer bag that’s functional and lightweight, a surprisingly difficult feat to pull off when making a quality bag.

Contemporary travel is no longer the enjoyable exercise that it once was – nowadays it is a simple struggle to make the experience as painless as possible.  Keeping everything streamlined by carrying the bare minimum is the best way to arrive unscathed and finding the right bag is paramount to this process.  The ideal travel bag should be large enough to store all the essentials for a trip, yet still compact enough to fit into minuscule luggage compartments.  And of course it must be sufficiently durable to take a beating from any heavyhanded airline employee and still come out looking good as new.

The Weekender -  Just big enough for a quick day or two, but compact enough that you can lug it around during your trip without feeling burdened.
